ABOUT ME

Steffi

GILI AIR WITH KIDS

Sonntag, 25. März 2018

Calm, turquoise waters, sea turtles, relaxed beach bars and breathtaking sunsets and good food. Welcome to paradise. Peace on the islands is mainly caused by the fact that there are no combustion engine vehicles. Here you get on only by foot, by bicycle or horse-drawn carriage, called Cidomos. Most tourists stay for three or four days on the Gilis. After that you need a little action again. Being with children means there is somehow always something going on. You will not find supermarkets here. Basically, everything is more expensive than on the mainland. For a good reason, all that stuff needs to be brought to the island.

HOW TO GET TO THE GILIS

We were picked up in Canggu and brought to Padangbai harbor by a small bus. then we went about 1 hour by speed boat to the Gilis. We had three seats, one of the children sat on the lap. Cost: 1,800,000 IRP (100 euros). Round trip. It always comes to waiting times. Punctuality - what is that? So pack something to play.

THE ROAD ON GILI AIR
Yes, the handsome carriages. And the horses are so beautifully decorated. We decided against the coach. It may certainly be a great experience with the children in a carriage to ride through the island paradise. Or to be driven to the accommodation and not having to drag a suitcase through the sand. But the animals are standing all day in in the direct sun and I hve not once seen tht they get water. We explained it to the children. And they agreed to walk.

BICYCLE OR RUNNING
Walk with children and explore the island. Yeah. Maybe in a couple of years. This may lead to whining infants in the heat. Mummy I'm hot. Mummy I can not. Can you carry me. If it works with your kids borrow a bicycle. Children ready to hit the rack or bike seat and go. We have paid IDR 50,000 (3 euros) for a bike per day.

SLEEPING ON GILI AIR
Meanwhile, there are many accommodations. We booked through Airbnb and a pool was important to us . No big resort. Bungalow resort would be perfect. And away from the action. We found it in the northwest. Locally, we have asked for a rollaway bed. No problem. Per night The co-sleeper was IDR 50,000 (3 euros) extra charge. The bungalow was IDR 470,000 (28 euros) per night including a small breakfast .

TIPS FOR RELAXED PARENTS
Gili Air can make children happy. I offer these three tips warmly at heart for giving parents also the oportunity to enjoy the slow island life.

Seek out a hotel in the northwest. It is a little quieter than the southeast. The children are free to move without the need to worry that they will be run over by a carriage. These dart along the pathes pretty swift.

Look out to have a hotel with pool and access to the beach because the water will be your nanny.

If it is possible leave your big luggage on the mainland. You wont really need that much. I packed three dresses. I wore my bikini and sarong the whole time. Everyone who has children knows how many times they change clothes a day. At least four times. You as a parent will be the best judge on the topic.

GILI AIR
10 THINGS To do with kids

CUDDLE CATS
Oh yes cats. What the dogs are to Bali are the cats on the Gilis. We needed to visit a particular restaurant because there was a sweet roll of 5 kittens there. A highlight for our kids.

HOPPING IN THE POOL
With or without water wings. Jump in the pool does not only make the children happy. We were fortunate that we had the pool to ourselves. Nudity was no problem. For the very young remember to bring a lycra. Another tip: buy sunscreen at home. In Indonesia, a small tube is IDR 150.000,- (10 euros).

A BED BUT IN THE SKY
Walk in the Clouds. Kids love it when it's cozy. A mosquito net creates a cozy betime atmosphere. And it protects our children from annoying mosquito bites.

RIDING ON THE BEACH
Oh yes, the love of horses is very important here. It was a highlight. Bright children's eyes and lots of hugs and patting the horse. Sitting on a big horse on the beach. And not in a luxurious stable. Is that against animal rights? No. The carriages are cruelty to animals. But bearing 20 kilos at the beach in a brease is not. If you deal carefully with the animals, there is even a kiss as a reward in it for you. The animals feel it.

FOOD FOR KIDS
Nasi Nasi Nasi: only rice. Mama we want spaghetti with tomato sauce. If you ask for favourite food I think 80% of the children answer: spaghetti. So we had spaghetti with tomato sauce for breakfast. During our stay the kids had it three times. It really is good for the child. Carbohydrates etc. The main thing is the kids are happy.

TREASURE HUNTING
Collect shells and coral (keep in mind that there regulations of not bringing them outside the country to protect nature, although the washed up corals on the beach are allredy dead however understandable if you consider that it takes 20.000 years to grow a reef). Always a nice souvenir of a ream vacation. Corals can be found on the Gilis to suffice. Unfortunately. Unfortunately, because of the Gilis have already many dead coral reefs. The dead coral pieces are then washed up on the beach. Sometimes the beach areas are littered with them. There are several reasons. Weather phenomena such as El Niño. Tourists humping on the corals. Or boats scrape over the coral gardens. In the north of the island you can still find sections with sand.

CYCLING
children on the luggage rack. A little padding with a towel and off you go. One can borrow even bicycle seats for the smaller children. Riding the bike is fun. Make a round trip around the island in half an hour. But pay attention - who loves his bike is pushing it. From time to time there are sections you get stuck in the sand. So get off and push. The pathes to the interior of the island are easily passable. And there's always something to discover.

SNORKELING
The Gilis are also a snorkeling and diving paradise. Advertised with colorful fish and turtles. The turtles are out on the reef. The kids and me did not see them, daddy did while diving. For little children, you should bring mask and snorkel from home. In the dive shops there was only equipment for adults. Snorkel training we did in the pool. Both children can already swim and dive. With the snorkel they had no problems as long as they could stand. And it's a great feeling when the water is no longer burning in the eyes

SWING BY THE SEA
Typical images for Gilis are the swings. Meanwhile you find them in many places at the sea or on the beach. At low tide, you have easy access to the swings that are in the water. Try it all. It will put a big grin on your face. At sunset, you can take even more beautiful pics. Great were thedouble swings. So we had no stress who is allowed to swing first.

SUNSET
There are beautiful sunsets on Gili Air. Seek out a nice location for dinner. Children can play on the beach. And you can relaxe and enjoy the sunset. With the right music it can bring you to tears. For me it was that way. It was a great moment.

OUR CONCLUSION
Back in Canggu I can only say: Trash. Mopeds. Möp. Mööp.We were getting so used to the only sounds besides the ocean breaks and birds being the beslls on the carriages. It is so quiet and relaxing on Gili Air. Seek out your accommodation in the northwest. in the southeast are construction sites, because the government has decided that the beaches must be freely accessible to all. No concrete. Beach for everyone. I think that's great. So they are torn down and rebuilt set back. Enjoy the island life. We look forward to the next time. Which one of you had been to Gili Air? And if so - how you liked it?
